The exhibition Circle Path draws on Oscar Tuazon’s experience of Kanazawa to develop a reflection on the natural forces and cycles that structure his work. Twenty years after his stay in the city—during which he took part in the set up of the inaugural exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art—he presents his Kanazawa Water Paintings, a series of works on paper produced through a process inspired by marbling: paint is applied directly onto the surface of water using materials—spray paint, marbling ink, watercolor—here diverted from their usual uses. This process, akin to an alchemical reaction, gives rise to fluid forms that capture the unstable movements of water while fixing them in color. Inspired by the city’s canals, the pond of Kenroku-en, and the beach of Matto, these works condense an experience of the landscape that is both physical and mnemonic.

Oscar Tuazon オスカー・トゥアゾン

Oscar Tuazon was born in 1975 in Seattle, Washington (USA). He currently lives in Los Angeles. 

Oscar Tuazon’s practice draws on both sculpture and architecture. Using the vocabulary and tradition of the former and the materials and processes of the latter, the artist creates objects, installations, and structures that can be contemplated as well as experienced. Often made at a large scale, these works question the site where they are installed, be it a museum or gallery, the public space or the natural environment. They reshape our conceptions of construction methods, of how architectural and sculptural forms fit into the natural and built environment, and, more broadly, of the way we move through or occupy places.
