Aglaia Konrad was born in 1960 in Salzburg. She currently lives in Brussels.
Since the beginning of the nineties, Aglaia Konrad has focused her attention on cities, especially large ones, documenting their infrastructure as well as their architecture, urban planning as well as spontaneous developments. Her exploration of metropolises such as Beijing, Cairo, Dakar, Sao Paulo, and Tokyo have given birth to a broad visual archive consisting of photographs and videos.
The context in which the artist’s work is shown is crucial. Every publication or exhibition is an occasion to reconfigure elements of this archive, giving it the form of a video, a slide-projection, a large-scale installation, a photo-essay, etc. For Konrad, photography and film are not a neutral and transparent medium for documenting an urban and architectural reality; they are physical tools for deconstructing and experiencing this reality.
The artist has received numerous prizes, including the Otto Mauer Prize (1997), the Camera Austria Award (2003), the Vevey International Photography Award (2004), the Albert Renger-Patzsch Prize (2007), and the Fernand Baudin Prize (2011).
