The artist titled the edition in reference to her “Muck Paintings”, a new method which involves pressing together two panels covered with pigments, dragging and pulling them apart, thus leaving muddy trails. The Muck Bugs are thus made from the paint left over from her pictorial experiments. From formless waste, these residues of color are given an animal form on their mineral pedestal; the entomologist's pins, which are supposed to fix the animal forever, instead give it direction and life. Behind this gesture, both delicate and mischievous, lies the artist's affirmation of her conception of painting as an essentially material, three-dimensional medium, capable of being charged with vital energy as well as spirit.
