As a desk calendar, 2023 borrows its form from the administrative and promotional strategies of the corporate environment. In their works, Denicolai & Provoost have often subverted such codes, playing with the formulas typical of advertising communication, the abstract imagery of accounting reports, or the fantasies associated with a brand. This time, they have applied their practice of detournement to the packaging of mass market products. Boxes of cookies, detergent and other items were carefully sanded, making the logos and visual identities almost disappear while revealing their common substance, that is, the cardboard. The dates run discreetly at the bottom of the pages. Rather than calling for a rational use of time, they suggest that we instead contemplate abstract compositions, cosmic sceneries, and ruins of an ancient world.
Denicolai & Provoost’s exhibition took place at Keijiban from September 15 to October 14, 2022.
