This new edition by Denicolai & Provoost takes as its point of departure a concrete scene observed in Milan: a provisional arrangement of wedges and elements intended for the renovation of an urban pavement. From this fleeting configuration emerges a work that gathers up the involuntary poetry of a particular situation in public space, while unfolding its latent possibilities in the form of a game—a game whose purpose may be, above all, to explore as freely as possible the uncertain contours of what it sets in motion.
Suspended somewhere between the board game, whose playing surface often takes the form of a grid, as it does here, and children’s games such as hopscotch, in which the ground becomes a space for free and continually reconfigurable intervention, Fitting Matter brings the domestic and the public, the natural and the artificial, the real space and the mental space, the rules and what escapes them, into interplay.
