No Idea of Perfection Is Desired is a unique edition of Japanese paper cut-outs by Nathalie Du Pasquier. Through her distinctive yet ever-changing formal vocabulary, the artist has created a complex and joyful combination of colors and textures, placing the work at the boundary between abstraction and figuration, surface and depth, sign and objecthood.
The format of the work is rather specific. As a long and horizontal stretch of decorated surface, it refers to the ancient tradition of the frieze, especially when we consider its initial presentation on the upper part of the Keijiban. Not only does the layering of various papers reproduce the variations in depth of a bas-relief, but the succession of patterns can also be read as a narrative, an esoteric tale in which architectonic elements mingle with previously unseen hieroglyphs and Chinese characters.
Nathalie Du Pasquier’s exhibition took place at Keijiban from May 15 to June 14, 2023.
