Mol (Paulista) is a set of twelve stickers, which can be placed on walls and doors, windows and mirrors, or kept as a book. Each sticker is a linear composition of seven discs made out of three colors, the discs overlaying each other simply yet elaborately. The work’s innocent complexity is heightened by its distribution into four chromatic series.
Like much of Lauwers’ works, this piece appears the result of a strict and mathematical protocol, like the ones that apply to any of the canonical works by Sol LeWitt and his fellow Minimalist artists. This abstract setting is nevertheless filled with fancy. The figurative reference to chemistry—the molecule structure being even more obvious with the base unit “mol” included in the title—, the free and unsystematic composition of colors, and the symbolic use of numbers relating to astrological cycles and calendar time all help make Mol (Paulista) a highly evocative work.
Pierre Lauwers’ exhibition took place at Keijiban from October 15 to November 14, 2021.
