Blue Slides consists of two identical sandals placed parallel to one another, toe to heel, each holding a small amount of water. As is often the case in Kimura’s work, ordinary found objects are here removed from their habitual use and surroundings, and placed in a situation where effects of repetition, reflection, and mirroring begin to unfold. One sandal seems to answer the other without ever quite corresponding to it, the regularity of their arrangement disturbed by the shifting and precarious presence of water. Through this displacement of expected symmetry, the pair gives rise to a form of floating wholeness. In the recognition of a scene at once familiar and strange, the work elicits a subtle disjunction between perception and memory.
