Batia Suter was born in 1967 in Switzerland. She currently lives in Amsterdam.
Batia Suter’s main material is found images. She draws images out of her vast collection of books, magazines, journal and atlases, ranging from the natural sciences and technology to art and history, and combines them to create large-scale installations or artist’s books.
To build her visual sequences, the artist makes use of framing, enlargement, layering, transfer, combination, and montage, operations that recall the processes and specific logic of our dreams. Each element of these mesmerizing narratives echoes the others, as if in a perpetual state of metamorphosis.
In the wake of Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne, the art historian’s legendary atlas that traced recurring visual themes and patterns from prehistory through to the modern age, Suter connects elements from different sources and temporalities to highlight unnoticed analogies, suggest new categorizations, and stimulate subjective readings.
Her recent shows include Hexamiles (Mont-Voisin), Barrage de Mauvoisin, Bagnes, Switzerland, 2019; Cloud Service, Printed Matter Inc., New York, USA, 2019; and Radial Grammar, Le Bal, Paris, France, 2018. These shows gave birth to three books, all published by ROMA publications, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
