Denicolai & Provoost

Simona Denicolai and Ivo Provoost were born respectively in 1972 and 1974. They currently live in Brussels.

Working as a duo since the mid-1990s, Denicolai & Provoost have developed an artistic practice that seeks to poeticize everyday situations. Most of their projects are conceived in a specific context, which they explore and reconfigure by means of scenarios and protocols involving objects, people, communities, animals, natural environments, and other entities.

Although the works eventually take the form of installations, videos, drawings, publications, they are not considered as an end, but rather as a dynamic situation, one that triggers encounters and collaborations, revives memories, questions social preconceptions, and raises awareness on neglected realities.

In the spring of 2021, Denicolai & Provoost’s unique work was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the SMAK, Ghent’s Museum for Contemporary Art. It notably featured their animated film Hello, are we in the show? (2020).

Recent solo shows include 10 hors-champs in the show, LMNO, Brussels, Belgium, 2021; Hello, are we in the show? (comment voir la même autre chose), SMAK, Ghent, Belgium, 2021; Gigantisme, art et industrie, FRAC Grand Large, Dunkerque, France, 2019 ; Tien taarten / ten cakes, Genk, Belgium, 2018 ; More, Galerie West, Den Haag, Netherlands, 2014.
