For more than twenty years, Denicolai & Provoost have used the earthworm as a metaphor of their artistic practice. In their own words: “The earthworm swallows its context, digests it and defecates it, in order to survive and move in its environment.” The “context” is indeed key to understanding the artists’ horizontal approach, how they connect to a given situation and poeticize it, and how they get all kinds of (human and non-human) protagonists to play a role in the work’s construction. As an animal that contributes modestly but resolutely to recycling the organic matter and nourishing the soil, the earthworm is also an “underground” and ecological figure—a nod to the role and the ego of today’s Artist.
Denicolai & Provoost’s exhibition took place at Keijiban from September 15 to October 14, 2022.
