The edition is conceived as a scaled-down version of the installation Emi Mizukami designed for our Oshiire space. A small painting and a colored resin relief are applied to a wooden support – a sort of grid with the motif of a butterfly in flight. Here, the ancient media of bas-relief and painting meet silicone molding and laser-cutting. The relief is inspired by a series of recent paintings on the theme of the city in fog. For the artist, fog appears as that space between our world and the afterlife; a fluid, in-between zone described in both Kunio Yanagita's Tōno Tale n° 99 and Rodenbach's Bruges-la-Morte. With its skull-like shape carved with various motifs, this relief also suggests the representation of a mental universe charged with Gothic and mythological reveries. Waiting for the reunion thus functions as a portable exhibition, a structure in which the narrative circulates across media, eras, and geographies.
