Masaya Chiba was born in 1980 in Yokohama. He currently lives in Tokyo.
Masaya Chiba’s work takes the form of sculptures, installations, photos and videos, but it is painting that constitutes its core. It is through painting that he deploys a wide repertoire of cultural references and visual operations that allow him to question the act of looking. One of his typical methods consists of gathering found or manufactured objects in his studio, which he then meticulously reproduces on canvas, integrating into this illusionist play other visual planes, surface effects and heterogeneous elements. Playing on the confusion between sculpture and painting, reality and representation, and blending the genres of portraiture, landscape and still life, the artist provides a sort of snapshot of the contemporary condition. With a certain sense of the absurd, he confronts us with the network of images and messages, memories and mediated perceptions with which our daily lives are woven.
His work is represented by Shugo Arts (Tokyo).
