Gesture as something

Gesture as something takes the form of a small-scale porcelain work: a crumpled shape, an intricate interplay of hollows and protrusions. As its title suggests, it is as much an object as it is a gesture—that of a hand kneading the raw yet delicate material of porcelain. A simple, singular gesture, executed without correction or repetition, like an imprint. It is also a primordial gesture, one that evokes the emergence of form and the prehistory of art. Situated within the lineage of a certain Arte Povera sensibility, the work complements this emphasis on materiality and process with a subtle symbolic dimension. The kneaded material indeed evokes an anatomical element: an organ such as the heart, bearer of the flow of life, or a pelvic bone, a site of origin, fertility, and vital energy in many cultures. These works thus present themselves as archetypal and ambivalent forms, charged as much with memory as with potentiality—fossils in the process of transformation.
