Edition of 15 copies numbered and signed by the artist on a certificate, plus 2 artist's proofs
This edition is a détournement of a distinctive mint metal tin. In addition to being a regular consumer of these lozenges, the artist carefully preserves their boxes – just one more in a long line of collections he has built up over the years, as a sort of collector of collections. The void referred to here could therefore be associated with the feelings of the frenzied consumer or collector reflecting on their own compulsion and the elusive motives that drive them. Here, introspective materialism ironically meets Buddhism and its central notion of the void.
Lozenges and candies in general are recurrent elements in the artist’s work, as well as the box, which is regularly used as both material and motif. Its fetishistic appeal, its microcosmic dimension, as well as its multiple cultural references represent some of its aspects that spark Sutter-Sudo’s interest. Here it can also be seen as a more direct homage to the iconic tin can that inspired so many of the neo-avant-garde artists who have grappled with industrial and consumerist expansion. In this regard, Akasegawa Genpei’s piece Canned Universe (1964) stands out. By emptying out a crab tin, placing the outer label on the inside and re-sealing the tin, the Japanese artist suggested that we turn the universe inside out.
Naoki Sutter-Shudo’s exhibition took place at Keijiban from April 15 to May 14, 2024.
