Nat Faulkner examines the physical conditions of photography – drawing on its foundations in chemistry, electroplating, optics and industrial production. Faulkner treats photography as an alchemical process, transforming his studio into a makeshift darkroom and choosing to amplify the conditions that typically resist regulation: light, temperature and time. By embracing the natural conditions of the environment, he cultivates a practice across sculpture and installation in which agency is displaced. The studio becomes collaborator and machine, with the artist functioning as operator.
