Ryan Gander was born in 1976. He currently lives in Suffolk and London.
His artistic practice encompasses a large variety of forms and mediums, ranging from installation to graphic design by way of photography, film and performance. “Signs” are the common thread and true material in all his works.
Following a certain conceptual approach, Gander deals with language, ideas, and the parameters of art production. But he does so in highly suggestive and playful way, producing works that have the conciseness, efficiency and long-lasting disruption of a zen kôan.
Visual paradoxes, incomplete meanings, association of signs, collaborative actions are some of the tools he use to undermine the commonplace, trigger imagination, and encourage viewers to complement the work with their own narratives.
His works are featured in public and private collections around the world, and they have been exhibited at major art events and institutions such as Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (2010), the Venice Biennale (2011), the Kassel documenta (2012), the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2012), the National Museum of Osaka (2017), and the Biennale of Sydney (2018), among others.
