This edition is made using traditional Kaga-temari techniques, a craft unique to Kanazawa and its surrounding area. Temari are embroidered silk balls with a bell at the center. Originally used for games, these balls have become decorative objects across the centuries, enabling young women to practice a wide repertoire of ornamentation. PERFECT CLOUD uses a typical Kaga-temari motif that combines squares and triangles. By covering a sphere, the three elementary shapes are thus brought together, in a tribute to classical geometry as well as Zen. Usually richly colored, the temari ball is monochrome here, allowing light to catch its surface differently depending on the orientation of the threads. While conforming to tradition, Lee’s choice of all-white seems to imbue this ancient motif with the virginity of a snowflake.
Seulgi Lee’s exhibition will take place at Keijiban from December 15, 2023 to January 14, 2024
